Comics: Philosophy & Practice

Comics: Philosophy & Practice

The University of Chicago approached Modular seeking something special for Comics: Philosophy & Practice: the first major conference to be held at the University’s brand new, $114 million Logan Center for the Arts. The conference itself—which features 17 of the world’s leading cartoonists—seeks to explore the intersection of art and academy over 3 days in May, 2012. The requirement was a vibrant website, in-keeping with the subject genre that was “not too academic, but still serious”, and exudes professionalism.

After much research into the genre we designed an elegant, typographically–led responsive mobile first website that allows the cartoonists themselves to take center stage while employing a light ‘graphic novel’ aesthetic. Special care was taken crafting the responsive element of the site, which allows attendees to interact, check the schedule, access participant information and links to their work, directly from their phones and tablets during the conference—something you can’t do with a printed program!

The result was a delighted client, and within 24–hours of website launch the conference had already reached capacity.
